About Kayan Region

ကယန်းတိုင်းရင်းသားများက မိမိတို့လူမျိုး၏ မူလအမည်မှန်မှာ "ကန်းယန်"ဖြစ်သည်ဟုဆိုသည်။ "ကန်း" မှာ ပိုင်နက်၊ နယ်မြေ ဖြစ်ပြီး၊ "ယန်"မှာ စွဲစွဲမြဲမြဲရှိခြင်း၊ အတည်တကျရှိခြင်းဟု အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရပါသည်။ ထို့ကြောင့် "ကန်းယန်" ဆိုသည်မှာ နယ်မြေဒေသတစ်ခုအတွင်း အတည်တကျစွဲစွဲမြဲမြဲနေတတ်သည့် လူမျိုးဟု ဆိုလိုသည်။ ကာလအတန်ကြာလာသည်နှင့်အမျှ "ကန်းယန်" မှ "ကယန်း" ဟူ၍ ခေါ်စမှတ်တွင်လာခဲ့ကြသည်။

The Kayan people say the original name of their people is Kanyang: kan means territory and yang means to remain or be established. Over time, Kanyang evolved into Kayan.

ကယန်းမျိုးနွယ်စုကြီး (၄) မျိုး — Four Major Kayan Tribes

ကယန်း (ပဒေါင်) / Kayan (Padaung) — mountain dwellers; women traditionally wear neck and ankle brass coils.
ယင်းဘော် / Yinbaw (Kangan) — live on plains; distinctive neck ornaments.
ကယန်း (ကဒေါ့) / Kayan (Kadot) — Gekho/Geba lineage; language close to Kayan (Padaung).
ဇယိမ် (လထာ) / Zayim (Lahta) — homes among rocks; unique highland lifestyle.

Location

Where is Kayan Region?

Located across eastern Myanmar — Loikaw and Deemawso (Kayah State), Thandaung (Kayin State), Pinlaung and Phekhon (southern Shan State), and the highlands of Lewe and Pyinmana (Mandalay Region). The landscape is mountainous with valleys, forests, and rivers such as Paung Laung, Tuk Ye Khap, Htoo, Kan Kalin, Katun, Nan Cho, and Nan Phe.

Other ethnic communities living alongside the Kayan include Gaba (Geba), Karen, Shan, Pa-O, and Bamar. Population estimates exceed 200,000, with low density due to terrain and travel difficulty.
